Friends of Broad Street Cemetery (FOBS)

In 2018, an eclectic group of Salemites formed the Friends of Broad Street Cemetery (FOBS) with the goal of helping to protect, preserve, and advocate for the city’s second oldest burial ground.

Accomplishments (and ongoing projects) include:

  • creating signage of notable people buried in the cemetery

  • providing tours and talks

  • planting two pollinator gardens

  • organizing spring clean ups

  • mapping trees and plants in the cemetery

  • researching dead people and grave carvers

  • supporting city efforts on burial ground infrastructure and preservation

  • participating in Memorial Day events and plaque ceremonies

  • requesting community preservation grants

  • maintaining a website and contact list

  • acting as caretakers, educators, and impromptu tour guides

  • overseeing structural health and wellbeing of markers, tombs, plants, and trees

  • advocating for and reporting issues to appropriate city members

  • convincing the city and residents that the cemetery is worth protecting, preserving, and restoring
